Advantages and Disadvantages of Homemade Solar Panels

With the rising cost of electricity and looming fossil fuel shortage, creating your own energy is a practical trend.

There are various alternative sources of energy such as sun, wind, and geothermal.

In 2007, both the United States and Spain installed 14 MW power stations indicating a trend towards solar power use.
Solar panels, the fundamental system for solar power, are now available in the market for both commercial and residential uses. Several manufacturers now provide do-it-yourself solar panel kits, which enables everyone to build their own solar panels.

Homemade solar panel requires a cheap initial capital for installation but in the long run, it enables you to save a lot of money from electricity bill. On one hand, critics say equipments in installing solar panels are relatively high compared to other renewable energy sources.

There is also a number of industries offering houses with solar panels like the Brandywine.

This is because the availability of natural light being converted into energy makes every household self-reliant and less dependent on power grid. With proper installation of devices like batteries and charger controllers, a household can avoid power outage.

Aside from electricity, solar power is also used to generate heat. This is called solar thermal technologies for water and space heating.

Some experts commented though that the use of solar power needs a back-up supply. This is usually complemented with wind power. In wind power, wind turbines are used to convert wind movement into energy such as electricity. This renewable energy source has also attracted many households.

Another important issue in the use of solar power is storage. For homemade solar power, batteries and local utility complement are two major storage methods.

The advisable battery is the deep-cycle kind, which discharges a large amount of stored energy while maintaining long life. The commonly used batteries are lead-acid and nickel-cadmium batteries, with the latter priced considerably higher.

Aside from its economic feasibility, it is also environmental friendly. It does not cause pollution.

However, critics consider maintenance of homemade solar panels as one of its disadvantages. Solar power experts and technicians are highly needed for repair. There is a lack of manufacturers that offer repair services.

With less disadvantage compared to it benefits, the use of solar power in households has been increasing. The rate of growing manufacturers and household users of solar panels indicate that solar power is now a favourable source of energy.
