Every day in the media, we see something about going green. Whether it is a business that has declared that it is going green, an environmental group telling us that we should be going green, or some product that uses the term going green to hawk their wares, green is definitely the in thing these days. But what does going green really mean?
There is really no specific definition of going green because it has such wide implications. The simple act of recycling an aluminum can, to adopting a totally green lifestyles are both considered going green, each to its own degree. Now that it is fashionable to adopt a green lifestyle, more and more people are looking for ways that they can help the environment.
As wonderful as it is for our planet, not everyone wants to, or is able to live a total green lifestyle by living off the land, growing their own food, and foregoing the ecologically damaging luxuries of life. Nor do people have the money to invest in expensive alternative energy sources for their homes such as solar panels, wind generators and other environmentally friendly power sources.
Most people really want to help the environment, but also want to balance it with living a comfortable lifestyle.
The first step in going green is to become aware of how the decisions you make affect the world. Every time you decide to use a reusable cup rather than a Styrofoam cup for your morning coffee, and every time you to turn off unnecessary lights, or turn the water off when you brush your teeth, you are making environmentally friendly decisions.
Fortunately there are hundreds if not thousands of easy ways to make simple changes in the way things can be done to make a real difference. Look on the Internet for “going green tips”, and you will come up with many ideas that you could easily implement in you every day routine. Slowly incorporating these tips into your lifestyle allows you to become accustomed to living a green life style so it becomes second nature. Making too many changes at one time may cause some people to lose interest.
The second step in going green would be to use some common sense. Do not waste water or electricity and do not waste our precious resources. If we make a good attempt at reducing the amount of pollution we generate, conserve energy at every opportunity we can, and work towards protecting the ecological balance of our planet, we can begin to know what going green means.
We all have an obligation to keep this planet from further harm, and our daily activities can add up to either a negative impact or a positive impact. Taking the time to learn about the bigger picture of what impact our activities have on the environment, can help us make the right choices. Reducing our carbon footprint becomes the basis for those choices.
The third step in going green is to reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible. Learning to live with a little less, being less wasteful, reusing more of the things we do purchase and recycling the products we buy is a great way to live and should be a goal for all.
